Man asks if he's wrong to ask his girlfriend to shave her armpits

A man has come under fire online for asking his girlfriend to shave her armits so she does not seem “weird” when she meets his family.

Posting on the popular Reddit forum #AITA, the man said that his girlfriend does not like shaving her armpits because it makes her feel more “womanly”.

He said he has no issue with it generally, but after inviting her to a family occasion where she’ll meet his family and friends for the first time, she told him she was going to wear a "strappy summer dress" and her armpits would be on show.

Worried that his family and friends will think she’s “weird”, he asked her to shave them for the event, which she refused to do and now does not want to go - leaving the man to wonder if he is being unreasonable.

He said: “She shaves everything else, although she’ll happily go kind of long between shaves, but her armpits she probably shaves once every two or three months for a special occasion if she really feels like it.”

He claims his girlfriend told him that she feels sexier and more like herself with unshaved armpits.

He said: “I don’t have an issue with this most of the time, although I’m not really used to this and would probably prefer she shaves, she’s really clean and never smells bad or anything.

“Recently I invited her to a family function where she’ll meet a lot of my family and some family friends for the first time.

“She said she’s going to wear a strappy summer dress. I asked her if she’ll shave her armpits and she said she wasn’t planning to.

“I asked her if she could do it for me as I don’t want my family or family friends to judge her or think she’s weird.”

But it was this request that caused problems with the couple because his girlfriend was offended that he wanted her to shave them.

He said: “She got really offended and said that was really harsh of me and now she doesn’t even want to come.

“I don’t think I’m being unreasonable asking her to shave.”

The post was extremely popular with other Redditors, with over 3,500 comments in response to his issue, mostly telling him that he is, in fact, an a****le.

One commenter said: “She likes it, as she told you, and what's important is what SHE THINKS about her body (and body hair).

“Did she ask your opinion on if she should shave? No? Then she doesn't want it, so keep it to yourself.”

Another said: “If he’s not willing to stand up to his family and friends if they talk badly about her then he shouldn’t date her. Part of dating someone is having their back and defending them.”

And a third said: “I think he threw his family/friends in there to try to manipulate her into doing something HE wants her to do. If she won’t do it for him, maybe she’ll do it to spare herself embarrassment from others.”
